How To Follow Up On Your Networking Emails
Following up is a critical part of the networking process.
Oftentimes, most of your responses are going to come on the second or third follow up. But how do we follow up properly without seeming “annoying” or bothering our contact? Here's how:
When Should You Follow Up?
You should follow up on your first networking message 2-3 business days after sending. For the second follow up, wait another 3-5 business days.
How Many Times Should You Follow Up?
We recommend sending two follow ups in addition to your original message. Using the cadence above, the timing might look like this:
Day 0: Initial Message Sent
Day 3: First Follow Up Sent
Day 7: Second Follow Up Sent
Follow Up Email Template
Here's an email template you can use when following up. We recommend replying back to the same thread that you've used to send the previous notes:
“Hi [Name],
I hope you’re having a great day.
I know this is a busy time of year and I realize how valuable your time is. I wanted to quickly follow up on my note below. I’m grateful for any time or advice you have to offer. If it’s too much to ask, I totally understand. Either way, have a great week!
Best,
[Your Name]“
