When Should You Bring Up Salary In An Interview?
When should you talk about salary expectations during the interview process?
Some people say you should wait until the very end, but we disagree.
When you wait until the very end, you run the risk of being completely misaligned on expectations and being forced to settle for less or having to withdraw after investing a ton of time into the process.
Instead, bring up salary as early as possible.
My recommendation is to do it in the first interview whether the employer brings it up or not.
There are 3 reasons why this matters:
1. Early Alignment On Salary Range
Too many job seekers think that waiting until end gives them more leverage.
In reality, it costs them on two fronts.
First, they tend to see more situations where the salary in the offer is lower than expected.
Making up the difference is hard.
Second, they rob themselves of weeks' worth of time they could use to prepare for negotiation.
2. Gauging The Company's Appetite For Negotiation
By bringing up salary early, you can gauge whether or not the company is willing to negotiate.
You also set the early expectation that negotiation is going to happen.
3. See How The Company Views Its Talent
If a company is willing to play ball, that’s great news.
If not, I’d question how they view investing in their employees.
If they’re stingy now, they’ll be stingy later with raised, promos, etc.
Is that really a place you want to work?
